The main artery that carries blood from the heart to the body is the aorta. After the left ventricle of the heart pumps oxygenated blood, it enters the aorta, which is the largest artery in the body. The aorta branches into various arteries that spread throughout the body, supplying oxygen-rich blood to all organs and tissues.

This function is critical for sustaining life, as delivering oxygen and nutrients to cells while removing waste products is essential for metabolic processes. The aorta's structure, with its thick elastic walls, allows it to handle high pressure from the blood being pumped directly from the heart.

In contrast, the pulmonary artery is responsible for carrying deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs for oxygenation, the coronary artery supplies blood specifically to the heart muscle itself, and the subclavian artery primarily supplies blood to the arms and upper body. Thus, the specific role of the aorta makes it the correct choice for the artery that carries blood from the heart to the body overall.
